Our SPARK Business Buddies reading program has begun again for 2024. Our business buddies are from KPMG. We are so grateful to them for giving up their time to help our young students improve their reading skills. Don’t forget that one of the best gifts you can give your child is the love of reading. If you can, please take some time to share a book with your child. Remember, our library is open every morning so you can borrow books (and its free!)
You will soon be receiving some samples of your child’s work. These are called an Evidence of Learning. These snapshots of specific learning areas show you a sample of what is currently being taught in those curriculum areas. Children are assessed against a particular task which gives the teacher an overview of their understanding of the subject. I have been impressed by the work our students are producing and I am proud of their courage and resilience as they learn new concepts and ideas. Please remember that you can ask to chat to your child’s teacher at any time. The quickest way to organise a meeting is to ring our office (6272 7574) and ask for a meeting time.
We have some exciting news about our school garden. We are lucky to be part of the MONA 24 Carrot Garden program. Our friends at 24C Gardens support us to have a productive garden so that we can teach our children how to grow (and cook) nutritious food. Our garden is about to get a makeover! This work will start next week. Watch out for the diggers and building works at the garden site. Thank you in advance for not parking on the grassed area at the back of Hull Street.
Kind regards
The Robot Man made an appearance in the POD last week to the delight of all students. They used Technic Lego to design and create 'Battle Bots' which they then coded. There were some great creations and furious battles were fought!
This was a great opportunity for our students to use some of the latest technology and to learn about programming - as well has having great fun!!
We have been learning about procedural text in class and what better way to learn something than to put it into practice! Procedural text is any piece of writing that gives step-by-step instructions on how to make or do something.
Last week it rained so much that we couldn't go outside to play, so we decided to have a class party. We made our own fairy bread by following along our own recipe (procedural text) that we created by arranging the picture tiles into the right order. Then we sat down to watch a short movie with some popcorn. We turned an ok day into a great day, even if we had to stay inside the whole time!
Our kinder classes have been on another walking excursion discovering our local community.
Early this week Kinder Blue and Kinder Gold took it in turns to walk along to the Old Chapel Tearooms.
We all had such a good time! There was so much to see there - they would love our families to visit as well. We sang some songs and we had scones with jam and cream - YUM! - and even a milo!
The SPARK reading program has been run at Glenorchy Primary for the past 13 years. Mentors from KPMG Hobart offices visit our school on a weekly basis to read one on one with students from Year 1/2. The program promotes links between literacy, self-esteem, school performance and adult life opportunities.
Last week students met with their mentors for the first time over morning tea, getting to know them and plan the books they will read together over the coming weeks.
Thank you to our KPMG mentors for your ongoing commitment to our students!
It is survey time again! Each year we ask you to complete a survey telling us what you think about our school. Please follow this Link to complete your survey.
