Busy Bees in Prep-1

Prep-1 Morrisby and Prep-1 Walters have recently finished their learning unit on honeybees, and what a buzzing success it was!

We discovered many fascinating facts - did you know that bees have two stomachs? One is their “honey stomach” which is used to store nectar. A honeybee may need to visit up to 1,000 flowers to fill it before flying back to the hive. Then the bees pass the nectar from mouth to mouth until it is placed into one of the honeycomb cells. At first the honey is very runny, so other bees flap their wings quickly to help dry it out. Amazing teamwork!

To celebrate the end of the unit both Prep-1 classes made delicious pancakes topped with - you guessed it - fresh honey. It was the perfect sweet ending to their busy bee learning adventure!

And just when it looks like these busy bees can rest...

The Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts at Libraries Tasmania has asked our students to create a swarm of bees to fill the ceiling of the foyer of the State Library. The Library is planning an exhibition to celebrate the first English language book about beekeeping - it was written in 1634!

Here's a sneek peek at our artwork...

The Exhibition will be open in October to the public, why not put it in your calendar and go and check it out (and our bees!).
